Wood to offer design services for floating wind farms in Scotland

John Wood Group (Wood), a British engineering and consulting firm has been awarded the principal designer and pre-feed scope for Salamander, a 100 MW floating wind farm Scotland. Salamander, a joint venture between Simply Blue Group, Ørsted, and Subsea 7, is located 35 km from Peterhead on Scotland’s east coast. Wood will carry out system-level pre-front-end engineering design (FEED) in order to facilitate planning, costing, and risk assessment of a FEED design process.

It will manage interfaces with the foundation designer and provide design services for subsea and onshore cables, as well as grid and onshore electrical connections. Additionally, Wood will be in charge of coordinating with turbine generator OEMs, compiling site data, port, transport, and installation analysis, as well as operations and maintenance (O&M) strategy and certification. As per the company’s statement, Salamander will provide the Scottish supply chain with an early capacity development opportunity and will enable it to play a significant part in the large-scale deployment of floating offshore wind energy. The project will complement the UK government’s goal of putting 5 GW of operational floating offshore wind in place by 2030 once it is completed.

In June 2022, Siemens Gamesa was awarded a contract to supply 60 wind turbine units for the 882 MW Moray West offshore wind power project in Scotland. According to the agreement, the company would deliver its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbines, each having a capacity of 14.7MW. Each SG 14-222 DD turbine would have a rotor diameter and use Siemens Gamesa’s 108 metre-long IntegralBlades.
