ENGIE and European Energy have signed an agreement to develop a large-scale renewable hydrogen project in Aabenraa Municipality, Denmark. The project will feature an electrolyser with a capacity of up to 150 MW and is planned to connect to the future Danish-German Hydrogen Backbone infrastructure. The facility will be developed close to an industrial-scale e-methanol plant, owned by Mitsui & Co. and European Energy.
Under the agreement, ENGIE will secure the marketing rights to more than 20,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually. Commercial operations are targeted to coincide with the expected commissioning of Denmark’s hydrogen backbone infrastructure around 2030. The renewable hydrogen produced is expected to supply industrial and mobility demand in Germany, supporting the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors and strengthening energy resilience within the European Union.
In April 2026, ENGIE acquired two battery energy storage system projects in Andalusia totaling 278 MW/1.1 GWh. These facilities located in Álora (78 MW/312 MWh) and Tarifa (200 MW/800 MWh) provide four hours of storage and utilise synchronous condensers to stabilise the grid through inertia and reactive power management. Construction on the projects is scheduled to commence in 2027, with the projects expected to be commissioned in 2028.
