The US Department of Energy (DOE) has released a Request for Information (RFI) to help guide the execution of $335 million in funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law for lithium-ion battery recycling programs. The DOE’s announcement of $3.16 billion in financing from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law in May 2022 is expanded upon in the RFI. This comprises $3.1 billion for materials refining and production plants, battery cell and pack manufacturing facilities, and recycling facilities, as well as $60 million to assist second-life battery applications and novel recycling materials processes to be put back into the supply chain. The RFI response deadline is October 14, 2022.
Over the following ten years, growth is anticipated to continue in the worldwide lithium-ion battery industry. Since 2008, battery costs have decreased by more than 90 per cent. In order to satisfy rising market demand, DOE is collaborating with the industry to establish a strong and sustainable U.S. battery supply chain. Batteries are essential for powering renewable energy technologies, including zero-emission vehicles and grid-scale energy storage.
In addition to accomplishing Biden’s decarbonization objectives, developing domestic production alternatives for zero-emission mobility will increase the reach and create more jobs in the energy sector. In accordance with President Biden’s Justice 40 plan, the programme will be executed.
