POWERGRID bags 6 GW transmission project for solar power evacuation from Rajasthan 

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) has emerged as the successful bidder under the tariff-based competitive bidding for establishing an inter-state transmission system to evacuate 6 GW of solar power from the Barmer-II renewable energy zone (REZ) in Rajasthan. The project will be developed on a build, own, operate and transfer basis, with quoted annual transmission charges of Rs 32.44 billion. Powergrid received the letter of intent on September 2, 2026.

Furthermore, the project involves the establishment of 6,000 MW, ±800 kV HVDC terminals at Barmer-II in Rajasthan and South Kalamb in Maharashtra, along with the augmentation of the South Kalamb substation. Additionally, it includes construction of an approximately 1,000 km ±800 kV HVDC bipole transmission line traversing Rajasthan, Gujarat and Maharashtra, as well as 400 kV transmission lines in Rajasthan and two synchronous condenser units at Barmer-II.

In July 2026, Powergrid commissioned the transmission system for the evacuation of power from the 7 GW REZ in the Khavda area of Gujarat under Phase IV – Part E4. The project achieved commercial operation with effect from June 21, 2026, in accordance with the applicable Central Electricity Regulatory Commission regulations.
