Evergy, a US-based power utility firm, has agreed to purchase the Persimmon Creek wind farm in western Oklahoma for $250 million from Scout Clean Energy and Elawan Energy. The 199 MW wind farm spans 17,000 acres in Oklahoma’s Dewey, Ellis, and Woodward counties. It has 80 wind turbines from GE and has been in operation since 2018. The agreement aims to increase Evergy’s portfolio of renewable energy assets. Customers of Evergy in the Missouri West region will receive the clean energy generated by the Persimmon Creek wind farm.
Evergy plans to add more than 3.5 GW of clean energy capacity over the next ten years while retiring more than 1.9 GW of coal-based fossil generation. Additionally, the company has set a target to reduce its carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 70 per cent by 2030. By 2045, it also intends to achieve net-zero emissions. The deal is expected to be completed in 2023, subject to closing conditions being met, including regulatory approvals.
Prior to this, Sequitur Renewables, a subsidiary of ArcLight Capital Partners (ArcLight), agreed to purchase a portfolio of operational wind farms in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. With affiliates of GlidePath Power Solutions, the company reached an agreement to purchase the portfolio. The portfolio sells power and renewable energy credits into the merchant PJM market and comprises five wind farms with a combined capacity of 185 MW.
