Energy Vault begins construction of SOSA Energy Center in Texas

Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. has begun construction of the SOSA energy center, a 150 MW/300 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) project located in Madison County, Texas, within the ERCOT North market. The project was initially developed by Savion, a Shell plc subsidiary, and was acquired by Energy Vault in the fourth quarter of 2025. Commercial operations for the project are expected in the second quarter of 2027

The SOSA energy center is being developed as part of Energy Vault’s “Own and Operate” asset strategy and is supported by a $300 million preferred equity investment from Orion Infrastructure Capital. The project will deploy Energy Vault’s third-generation B-VAULT DC battery storage technology. Energy Vault will undertake engineering, procurement, construction, and long-term service activities for the project, retaining full operational control. An offtake arrangement with an unnamed investment-grade counterparty, with an expected tenure of six to eight years, is also reportedly under discussion.

In August 2025, Energy Vault signed an agreement with Astor Enerji to strengthen global supply chains for BESS projects. The agreement includes the supply of 2 GWh of Energy Vault’s B-VAULT BESS for Astor Enerji’s four grid-connected photovoltaic projects in Romania. These BESS projects will be operated using Energy Vault’s VaultOS energy management platform to improve performance and ensure grid stability.
