Sudipta Ghosh, general counsel, CLP India, is responsible for advising the company on various legal aspects of setting up conventional and renewable energy projects in India. She joined CLP in 2009 as an assistant legal counsel and has since grown with the organisation. In 2017, she was appointed general counsel, which made her the first woman to be a part of the leadership team of CLP India and the youngest member of the team as well. She was also recognised as one of the “top 100 women lawyers in India” by the World IP Forum in 2017 and as a “Star Woman in Law” by Legal Era.
Prior to joining CLP India, Ghosh worked with renowned law firms such as Trilegal and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas. She completed her LLM from the University of London, and is a member of the Bar Council of Delhi and a solicitor in England and Wales.
“In my view, the Indian power sector is going through a challenging phase,” says Ghosh. “Some of this is natural as the sector makes the transition from hydrocarbons to renewable sources of energy. The industry has had a few challenges such as a shortage in coal supply, payment dues from discoms and a changing regulatory environment. This has led to a slowdown in capacity addition.”
Talking about her memorable assignments, Ghosh says, “As clichéd as it may sound, each project undertaken at CLP has been memorable for me. However, the way your first child is always special, I would say working on our Jhajjar project has been my most memorable assignment since I started my stint at CLP with that project.”
Ghosh describes her management style as a combination of being assertive and being collaborative. She strongly believes that a good leader must have the power to communicate effectively, the ability to deliver, as well as the vision to inspire and empower.
Apart from being a career woman, Ghosh is a mother of two children. “Today, nothing gives me a greater sense of accomplishment than seeing my children growing into independent young individuals with a strong sense of values,” she says.
To unwind, Ghosh loves cooking and travelling, and feels one can tell an entire country’s history, geography and culture from just a simple plate of food. She concludes with a quote from the book, Rebel Girls: “Dream bigger, aim higher, fight harder and, when in doubt, remember you are right.”
