Cabinet approves Green Energy Corridor Phase-III scheme

The Union Cabinet has approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) scheme to strengthen the intra-state transmission system (InSTS) and facilitate evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy across the country. The scheme would also include the deployment of 50 GWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS).

The scheme is targeted for completion by the financial year 2032-33, with a total outlay of Rs 1,864.05 billion. Of this, Rs 1,363.78 billion will be allocated for InSTS under the scheme, while approximately Rs 500 billion will be allocated for BESS. Additionally, the scheme will provide Rs 540.82 billion in central financial assistance to offset InSTS charges and help reduce power costs.

Furthermore, greenfield transmission projects will be implemented through tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB), while brownfield upgrades will be implemented under the cost-plus basis. State transmission utilities will serve as the overall implementing agency, while transmission service providers will participate through the TBCB route under a build-own-operate-maintain model.
