The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved a €450 million loan to OMV for the construction of a green hydrogen production project in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria. The funding by EIB represents around three-quarters of the projected €600 million investment cost of the project. The project will feature a 140 MW electrolyser powered by renewable electricity. The project is expected to produce up to 23,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually.
Furthermore, the project is under construction and is expected to commence operations by the end of 2027. Renewable hydrogen produced will be transported via a 22-km pipeline to OMV’s Schwechat refinery, replacing fossil-based hydrogen in refining processes. The project is expected to reduce the refinery’s carbon emissions by up to 150,000 tonnes annually while supporting the future production of sustainable aviation fuels and other low-carbon products.
In April 2026, EIB approved €10 billion in financing, including €2 billion for clean energy initiatives in Europe. The funding will support offshore wind in Germany, solar projects in Italy, and renewable adoption by businesses in Austria. It also includes investments in energy efficiency for heating systems in Latvia and grid upgrades in the Netherlands.
