CCEA approves the construction of the 1.72 GW Kamala hydropower project in Arunachal Pradesh

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved an investment of Rs 260.69 billion for the development of the 1,720 MW (8 x 210 MW and 1 x 40 MW) Kamala hydroelectric project in the Kamle, Kra Daadi, and Kurung Kumey districts in Arunachal Pradesh. The project will be implemented through a joint venture company between NHPC Limited and the government of Arunachal Pradesh. The estimated timeline for completion has been set at 96 months.

Furthermore, the project is expected to generate 6,870 million units of energy annually. The generated power will improve the electricity supply in Arunachal Pradesh, assist in managing peak demand, and help balance the national grid. Additionally, the project will provide flood moderation benefits in the Brahmaputra valley. Moreover, the state will receive 12 per cent free power, with an additional 1 per cent allocated to the local area development fund. The project will also lead to infrastructure development across the project districts, including approximately 196 km of roads and bridges, which will largely be accessible for local use.

In April 2026, the  CCEA approved an investment of Rs 141.05 billion for the development of the 1,200 MW (6 x 190 MW and 1 x 60 MW) Kalai-II hydroelectric project on the Lohit River in Anjaw district, Arunachal Pradesh. The Kalai-II project will be implemented through a joint venture company between THDC India Limited and the government of Arunachal Pradesh.
