CIP sells 50 per cent stake in 500 MW BESS project

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its fund Copenhagen Infrastructure IV, has inked an agreement to sell a 50 per cent stake in the 500 MW Coalburn 2 battery energy storage system (BESS) project to funds managed by AIP Management. Located in South Lanarkshire, southern Scotland, Coalburn 2 is a two-hour duration lithium-ion storage facility currently under construction. CIP made its final investment decision for Coalburn 2 in December 2024 and will continue leading the project’s delivery during the construction phase.

The ownership transfer to AIP will take effect upon site commissioning. Coalburn 2 is one of three transmission-connected BESS projects co-developed by Alcemi and CIP that is currently being constructed by CIP in Scotland. Together, these facilities will provide 1.5 GW/3 GWh of energy storage, equivalent to powering more than 4.5 million households for two hours. Additionally, the project has a 10-year optimisation agreement with SSE, as well as a 15-year capacity market agreement.

In September 2025, CIP, through its CI Advanced Bioenergy Fund I, approved the final investment decision for the Nivalan Biokaasu biogas facility in Finland, The facility will produce more than 200 GWh of biomethane annually, with construction scheduled for late 2025, and operations scheduled for the second half of 2027.
