A 3 MW green hydrogen plant has been completed at Vilnius’ second combined heat and power plant (CHP-2) in Lithuania, with equipment and system testing currently underway. The project also includes a hydrogen refuelling station, being installed at the Viršuliškės public transport park. The project is expected to avoid approximately 1,400 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Furthermore, the project is initially expected to supply 16 hydrogen-powered city buses, replacing diesel buses. The facility can produce up to 285,000 kg of hydrogen per year, with sufficient capacity to support approximately 40 hydrogen buses as the fleet expands. The project, valued at around €10 million, includes €5.64 million in EU funding, with the remainder financed by the Vilnius city municipality. Hydrogen production at the facility is expected to commence by the end of 2026.
In June 2026, ENGIE and European Energy signed an agreement to develop a large-scale renewable hydrogen project in Aabenraa Municipality, Denmark. The project will feature an electrolyser with a capacity of up to 150 MW and is planned to connect to the future Danish-German Hydrogen Backbone infrastructure. The facility will be developed close to an industrial-scale e-methanol plant, owned by Mitsui & Co. and European Energy.
