Shripad Naik shares status of power supply in India

The Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha gave a snapshot of power supply position in India. The power generation capacity in India has increased to 446,190 MW as of June 2024. This is a 79.5 per cent increase from March 2015.

In the rural areas, the power supply has risen to 21.9 hours per day as of 2024. This is a substantial increase from 12.5 hours. In the urban areas, it has increased to 23.4 hours. In the last decade, the difference between energy required and supplied has fallen to 0.1 per cent.

Full electrification of rural areas has been achieved. In the last ten years, over 18,374 villages and 28.6 million households have been electrified. All this was completed under the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) and PM- Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA) scheme.

New schemes have been announced for further electrification. Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) will cover 0.684 million unelectrified households. PM-JANMAN will cover on-grid electrification of 0.124 million households.

New infrastructure work worth Rs 60.89 billion was sanctioned. This included new HT & LT lines, re-conductoring of old or damaged lines, feeder bifurcation of overloaded feeders, feeder segregation, creation of resilient distribution infrastructure etc.

The whole country has been turned into one grid through 195,181 ckt of connected transmission lines. In addition to this, 2,927 new sub-stations have been added, 3,965 existing sub-stations upgraded, 692,200 distribution transformers installed, 113,938 ckm of feeder separation, and 850,000 ckm of HT and LT lines upgraded. These measures have turned India into a power-sufficient country.
