NTPC Limited has invited an expression of interest (EoI) for setting up a pilot project for the development and installation of a grid-connected battery energy storage system (BESS) using sodium-ion battery technology. The project will be implemented at existing NTPC thermal power stations or NTPC office buildings. Applicants can propose either a 100 kWh usable energy capacity BESS or propose a BESS capacity based on their standard configuration and suitable demonstration scale. The bid submission deadline is October 15, 2026.
According to the tender guidelines, the scope of work includes the design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the complete sodium-ion BESS, including the battery management system, power conversion system, energy management system, switchgear and auxiliary systems. Additionally, the work covers integration with the existing electrical system at the point of interconnection, associated control, communication, protection and metering systems, along with safety and fire protection systems. Furthermore, the applicant will provide comprehensive annual maintenance for three years from commissioning, demonstrate key performance parameters, obtain necessary statutory approvals, share operating and technical data, and provide training to NTPC personnel.
NTPC will be responsible for providing the land required for installation and commissioning of the BESS within its premises. Moreover, it will provide access to the nearest available 415 V low-tension switchgear for charging, discharging and auxiliary power requirements. Furthermore, NTPC will facilitate statutory clearances, installation, testing and commissioning, and provide support for operation and maintenance and the collection and analysis of operating data to assess the BESS performance.
