WABAG signs MoU with PEAK to set up 100 bio-CNG plants

VA Tech Wabag Limited (WABAG), a water technology Indian multinational group, with Peak Sustainability Ventures (PEAK), has signed an MoU to set up 100 bio-CNG plants at sewage treatment facilities throughout India and other agreed-upon locations in the GCC, Africa, and European countries. The objective of the collaboration is to harness the untapped potential of sewage treatment plants and produce bio-CNG to utilise it for various purposes, including mobility applications in trucks and heavy-duty vehicles, as well as for industrial use, ultimately diminishing the reliance on fossil fuels. This endeavor not only addresses the increasing energy demand in a responsible and environmentally friendly way but also aligns with India’s dedication to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating air pollution caused by methane.

Leveraging its expertise and knowledge in implementing sustainable solutions, WABAG will serve as a technology partner, taking charge of the execution, commissioning, and operations and maintenance of the bio-CNG plants. PEAK, on the other hand, will contribute insights in energy-related aspects and aid in securing capital for scaling up the projects.

The anticipated business opportunity for setting up 100 bio-CNG plants is estimated to exceed $200 million. This partnership is geared towards producing over 73 million Kgs of bio-CNG annually. Such an initiative is poised to make a substantial impact on local and agrarian economies, fostering employment opportunities. Additionally, it aligns with the G20 initiative of the Global Biofuel Alliance, offering significant ecological advantages and bolstering the country’s energy security.

In December 2023, one of the subsidiaries of Thermax Limited won a contract of over Rs 5 billion for the establishment of five bio-CNG facilities throughout India.
