Utilitas begins construction of 117 MW hybrid project in Latvia

Utilitas Wind has commenced construction of the 117 MW Lode hybrid renewable energy park located in Valmiera municipality, Latvia. The project comprises 18 Vestas wind turbines of 6.5 MW each, delivering a total installed wind capacity of 117 MW. The project will also include a 60 MW/240 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The wind farm is expected to generate around 330 GWh of electricity annually. The project is expected to commence operations in early 2028.

Furthermore, the project is being financed by SEB Pank, Swedbank and OP Corporate Bank, with support under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) Energy programme. Verston Eesti OÜ is constructing the access roads and grid connection infrastructure for the project, while Connecto Latvija SIA is undertaking the cabling and electrical works, and AIMASA SIA is responsible for building the wind turbine foundations. The project will also be connected to the Estonian-Latvian 330 kV transmission interconnection. 

In June 2026, Utilitas completed the second phase of the expansion of the Tārgale BESS project in Ventspils Municipality, doubling the project’s capacity to 20 MW/40 MWh. The project is located adjacent to the Tārgale wind farm. With a storage capacity of 40 MWh, the project can store enough electricity to supply approximately 6,000 households for one day.
