The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has released the report on the floating solar photovoltaic (PV) potential assessment of India. The report estimates the country’s floating solar PV potential at over 102 GWp, taking the total assessed solar potential to 3,445 GWp. The ministry is also working on a dedicated scheme to promote floating solar deployment.
The assessment, conducted by the National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE), used a data-driven approach, analysing key hydrological and topographical factors to assess the suitability of water bodies across states. The report identified Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha and Telangana as the states with the highest potential for floating solar project development.
Furthermore, the online portal for the Small Hydro Power Development Scheme has also been launched to boost transparency and faster implementation of small hydro projects in the country.
Earlier, in February 2026, MNRE held a stakeholder consultation workshop to deliberate on the draft floating solar PV potential assessment report and the draft floating solar policy. The report and proposal were prepared by the NISE & IIT Roorkee, respectively.
