Indian Railways to run its first indigenous hydrogen-powered train set

Indian Railways has completed the country’s first domestically developed hydrogen-powered train set. The pilot initiative was created in line with the specifications of the Research, Design and Standards Organisation. It is intended to showcase the use of hydrogen-based rail technology within the Indian rail network.

The train set consists of 10 coaches and a total power capacity of 2400 kW. Furthermore, it features two driving power cars of 1200 kW each, supported by eight passenger coaches. Additionally, while the hydrogen train set has been fully manufactured, work is underway to establish a dedicated green hydrogen production plant in Jind. The plant will generate hydrogen through the electrolysis process, a critical pathway for green hydrogen production.

Earlier this month, NTPC Limited’s 3.7 MW solar-hydrogen project in Ladakh was inaugurated, featuring a stand-alone microgrid designed to deliver 200 kW of round-the-clock power using hydrogen storage. The project is intended to replace diesel generator sets currently used at remote army locations.
