ACWA Power and Bapco Energies have entered into a joint development agreement to collaborate on the development of a solar project integrated with a battery energy storage system in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. The arrangement outlines cooperation between the two companies to jointly develop the project through multiple phases, with the planned generation capacity expected to reach up to 2.8 GW.
All electricity produced from the project will be transmitted to Bapco Energies’ load centre in Bahrain. This is intended to support the country’s energy requirements and contribute to its shift toward renewable energy. The initiative also aims to strengthen the region’s role in exporting clean energy and contribute to wider emissions-reduction objectives. Furthermore, the collaboration supports cross-border clean power movement within the Gulf Cooperation Council and forms part of Bapco Energies’ implementation efforts under the Bahrain National Energy Strategy.
Earlier this month: ACWA Power, along with Water and Electricity Holding Company and Saudi Aramco Power Company, completed financing for seven renewable energy projects in Saudi Arabia with a combined capacity of 15,000 MW. The Saudi Power Procurement Company will act as both the procurer and the offtaker for these projects. The total investment stands at $8.2 billion, with commercial operations expected between late 2027 and early 2028.
