Alpiq acquires 535 MW Navaleo Hydro PSP in Spain

Alpiq has acquired the Navaleo hydro pumped storage project (PSP) in Castilla y León, Spain. The project was developed by Erbienergía and is currently at an advanced stage, with commercial operations planned for the early 2030s. The project is expected to provide 535 MW of flexible capacity to the Spanish grid, supporting system stability and enabling higher renewable energy integration.

The project will feature a closed-loop configuration designed to deliver at least eight hours of energy storage. Additionally, a 75-year water concession has been secured for the project. Furthermore, the development will repurpose a former mining site into a clean energy asset. The plant will also function as a water treatment system, addressing pollution from historical mining activity.

In January 2026, Alpiq acquired the operational 100 MW/200 MWh Cheviré battery energy storage system project in Nantes Saint-Nazaire, France, from Harmony Energy. The project was inaugurated in December 2025, and can provide ancillary services to the national grid and supply electricity to around 170,000 households for two hours.
