VOC Port to produce and use  green hydrogen within campus

V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port has unveiled a port-based green hydrogen pilot project in India. The port will produce and use green hydrogen within its campus. It has become the first port in the country to achieve this.

The 10 Nm³/hr pilot facility was built at a cost of approximately Rs 0.03 billion. In this, the green hydrogen produced from the dedicated production system of the port facility will be utilised to power streetlights and an electric vehicle charging station inside the port colony.

Earlier in November 2025, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, Tuticorin, inked a MoU with CGS Energy for the development of a 300 tonne per day green ammonia production plant.

Furthermore, in September 2025, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy recognised three major ports as green hydrogen hubs under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.  V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority was one of the ports. Other ports included Deendayal Port Authority and Paradip Port Authority.
