EKI Energy Services selected as carbon consultant for Varanasi smart city bio-conversion project

EKI Energy Services Limited has been appointed as the carbon consultant for the Varanasi smart city bio-conversion project, which aims to reduce methane emissions and promote sustainable development in the region. Located in Shahanshahpur, Varanasi district, the project uses anaerobic digestion technology to convert around 70 tonnes of animal manure and organic feedstock daily into compressed biogas and organic fertilisers.

The bio-conversion project reportedly has a lifespan of 25 years. It is a collaboration between the Government of India, Adani Group, Gobardhan Varanasi Foundation SPV, and local authorities. In its initial monitoring period, the project successfully avoided 2,806 tonnes of carbon emissions. The project is expected to reduce 33,187 tonnes of carbon emissions over its seven-year crediting period.

The project generates between 2,500 and 2,800 kg of compressed biogas per day. In addition to biogas, it produces fermented organic manure and liquid organic manure, which are used to support sustainable farming practices. The project aligns with India’s national goals of waste recycling, clean energy, and reducing dependency on fossil fuels for transportation, as a part of the Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation scheme
