With over 18 years of experience in big four consulting firms, Mohammad Saif, partner at EY in the strategy and transactions vertical, has worked closely with utilities, regulators, policymakers, funding institutions and corporates, helping shape the sector’s trajectory. Currently, he focuses on the power and utilities domain within the government market segment. His association with EY has allowed him to evolve from a transactional consultant into a trusted adviser, solving complex problems and supporting clients across the sector value chain, particularly in promoting and adopting clean energy solutions.
“The last few years have seen a reinvigorated focus on the hydro sector given its contribution to the country’s clean energy transition goals. The setting up of new pumped hydro plants is gaining momentum owing to their storage capabilities, which make them a long-term, low-cost substitute to battery-based storage. The potential of pumped hydro in the country has increased manyfold with the inclusion of off-stream-closed-loop design. While the benefits of hydro are acceptable to everyone, its challenges have made most investors look to other renewable sources. While there is a significant thrust by the government, further support is needed, including enhancing private sector participation, laying down a robust public-private partnership framework, minimising the design-to-commissioning timeline and pushing technical advancement to enhance availability and minimise unplanned outages,” says Saif.
As a leader, Saif follows a democratic leadership style, empowering his team to take ownership of their work while ensuring client expectations remain a priority.
Outside of work, Saif prioritises spending quality time with his family – his wife and two daughters. He enjoys engaging in constructive activities with them, such as cooking, reading and going on long drives. He also maintains an active lifestyle, dedicating time to the gym daily and playing tennis on weekends.
Looking ahead, Saif remains committed to supporting India’s clean energy transition by collaborating with key stakeholders to drive progress in the sector. On a personal level, he aspires to continue evolving as a leader, fostering the next generation of industry leaders.
Saif holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a postgraduate degree in business administration with a specialisation in power management.
