RWE secures over €619 million funding for hydrogen projects in Germany

The German government and federal state governments have granted funding to RWE of over €619 million to implement two major hydrogen projects. This funding will support the construction of a 300 MW electrolyser in Lingen (Lower Saxony) as part of the GET H2 Nukleus project, as well as a hydrogen facility in Gronau-Epe (North Rhine-Westphalia). In February, the EU Commission identified these projects, along with other hydrogen initiatives, as Important Projects of Common European Interest.

Additionally, funding of €199 million has been allocated to a consortium, which includes RWE, for the development of a 100 MW electrolyser plant at the port of Rostock (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) as part of the HyTechHafen Rostock project. The federal government will cover 70 per cent of the funding for each project, while the states of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania will contribute the remaining 30 per cent for projects within their territories.

In May 2024, RWE concluded the final investment decision for the Nordseecluster, which includes a cluster of four offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 1.6 GW. These wind farms will be situated about 50 km north of Juist Island in the North Sea. The Nordseecluster will be executed in two phases – Nordseecluster A and B.
