GUVNL declares winners of its 250 MW BESS auction

Results for Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited’s (GUVNL) auction to develop pilot projects of 250 MW/ 500 MWh standalone battery energy storage systems (BESS) projects, phase II, have been announced. The tender was issued in November 2023. The projects will be set up in Gujarat as a part of tariff based global competitive bidding. Gensol Engineering has won 70 MW/ 140 MWh by quoting Rs 448,996 per MW per month. While, Indigrid 2 has won 180 MW/ 360 MWh by quoting Rs 449,996 per MW per month.

The projects will be developed on the basis of build, own, and operate model. GUVNL aims to employ energy storage systems as needed, tailored to the needs of state distribution companies during both peak and off-peak hours. The projects are slated to be commissioned within 18 months from the commencement date of the battery energy storage purchase agreement. The project’s capacity will have a power rating of 250 MW for a total energy storage of 500 MWh (250 MW x 2 hours). The energy rating of the system, set at 500 MWh, represents the dispatchable capacity measured at the metering point.

Recently, in March 2024, NLC India Green Energy Limited inked a power purchase agreement with GUVNL for a 600 MW solar project at Khavda solar park, Bhuj district, Gujarat. In the same month, results were announced for GUVNL’s auction to develop 1,125 MW of grid-connected solar power projects in Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited’s renewable energy park at Khavda, stage 3. Solairecraft (Engie) won 200 MW by quoting 2.62 per kWh. While, NTPC Renewable Energy Limited won 225 MW by quoting 2.67 per kWh. Other companies won the following capacities: NHPC – 200 MW, JSW Neo Energy – 300 MW, and SJVN Limited – 200 MW, by quoting Rs 2.66 per kWh.
