Hexicon AB, a Swedish floating wind specialist, has been granted permission to connect six floating wind facilities in Italy with a total capacity of 7.1 GW to the national grid. Reportedly, the permits were granted by Italian transmission system operator (TSO) Terna SpA.
The Swedish developer is active in Italy through AvenHexicon, a 50-50 joint venture with local renewables developer Avapa Energy Srl. AvenHexicon is developing seven sites for floating wind off the coasts of Sardinia, Sicily and Puglia in southern Italy and the permit for the seventh project is awaited shortly. By granting a connection permit, Terna pledges to provide the necessary capacity for the connection of the six wind floaters to the grid. The permit is part of the procedure preceding the issue of the main authorisation for the construction and operation of an offshore wind farm.
In July 2022, the Yeonggwang Project, a 1.2 GW floating wind project off the south-west coast of South Korea, was the subject of a sale and purchase agreement signed by offshore wind developer Hexicon Korea. According to the agreement, Hexicon Korea would sell its 40 per cent stake in the project to an undisclosed buyer, who would then become the project’s 100 per cent owner and take over its financial management moving forward.
