Vattenfall, a Swedish energy company, has chosen to exercise its rights to develop the N-7.2 offshore wind project off the coast of Germany. The 980 MW project, which is 85 km from the island of Borkum, was given to Vattenfall by RWE Renewables, a subsidiary of the German energy company RWE. Reportedly, in order to develop and construct the wind farm, the company had notified the German authority of its decision to exercise its right of entry to the N-7.2 project.
Once Vattenfall has made its final investment decision, the N-7.2 project is expected to be connected to the German electricity grid in 2027. Before being acquired by Vattenfall in 2016, the wind farm was previously built by a group managed by Strabag under the name “Global Tech II.” Later, Vattenfall was given the right of entry and the auction was conducted under a new offshore wind tendering system. Vattenfall presently generates 11.2 TWh of energy annually from 4.2 GW of onshore and offshore wind generation. In Germany, the company manages the DanTysk and Sandbank wind farms.
In June 2022, Vattenfal agreed to purchase an 85 per cent stake in two offshore wind farms in Gothenburg, Sweden, from Zephyr, a wind power company. The Vidar and Poseidon wind facilities would be constructed between 25 and 27 km north of Gothenburg, on the Swedish west coast.
