The largest electricity provider in Sri Lanka, the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has floated a tender for the installation of 30 MW of solar capacity throughout the nation. The capacity of the five ground-mounted and floating solar projects will range between 2 MW to 10 MW.
The chosen developers will be required to establish the facilities on a build-own-operate basis. Also, they will be granted power purchase agreements for a period of 20 years. The bid submission deadline for the project is October 27,2022.
In August 2022, another tender was issued by CEB for the development and construction of a 100 MW solar plant in Siyambalanduwa, Uva province. A recent joint study by the Asian Development Bank and the UN Development Programme found that Sri Lanka has the capacity to install 16 GW of solar energy. It intends to meet its entire energy demand with renewables by 2050. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, Sri Lanka installed 434 MW of solar power by the end of 2021. The country aims to add 1 GW of solar energy capacity by the end of 2025 through its Soorya Bala Sangramaya programme.
