Malaysia-based Leader Energy Group Berhad has commenced construction of a 100 MW/400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Pajam, Negeri Sembilan, with commissioning scheduled for 2027. The project is being developed under Malaysia’s Battery Energy Storage System bidding programme (MyBeST).
Administered by Malaysia’s Energy Commission, MyBeST comprises four grid-connected BESS projects, each with 100 MW of power capacity and 400 MWh of storage capacity. Collectively, the projects will provide 400 MW/1,600 MWh of storage capacity. The programme aims to reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants, lower electricity system costs over time, and support the National Energy Transition Roadmap’s target of achieving 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050.
Earlier, in July 2026, Leader Energy conducted the groundbreaking of the 99 MWac Leader Solar Energy III project, which was awarded under Malaysia’s Large-Scale Solar 5+ (LSS5+) Programme. The project is located in Kedah, Malaysia, and is scheduled to begin operations in 2027. It will add renewable energy capacity to Malaysia’s national grid.
