Vattenfall awards 1 GWh BESS project to Fluence

Vattenfall has awarded Fluence Energy the contract to deliver its planned battery energy storage system (BESS) project in Brunsbüttel, Germany. The project will have an installed capacity of 254 MW/1,000 MWh. It will be built at the site of a nuclear power plant that is currently being decommissioned.

Fluence will deliver the project on a turnkey basis, covering engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning, along with long-term service support. The four-hour BESS facility will use Fluence’s Gridstack Pro 5000 platform. The construction is expected to begin in 2027, with commissioning and connection to the 50Hertz 380 kV transmission network planned for the end of 2028.

Earlier, in September 2026, Return and Vattenfall signed a long-term agreement for the 200 MW/800 MWh Sirius BESS project located in Winschoten, Groningen, Netherlands. The project is being delivered by Huawei, Hanab, and Omexom, covering battery technology, construction, and installation.
