MorGen Energy, a subsidiary of Trafigura, has secured a conditional grant of up to €422.75 million under the European Hydrogen Bank auction funded by the EU Innovation Fund. The grant supports the future operations of the Njordkraft green hydrogen project which is located in Esbjerg, Denmark. The project is expected to produce around 45,500 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually for sectors including steel, refining and energy-intensive manufacturing.
The first phase of the project includes 300 MW of electrolyser capacity, with plans to expand to 1 GW over time. The project will connect to the planned Danish-German hydrogen backbone pipeline linking Esbjerg and Heidenau near Hamburg. Furthermore, the project will produce RFNBO-compliant renewable hydrogen for industrial customers in Germany and mainland Europe.
In April 2026, Trafigura announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, MorGen Energy, had taken the final investment decision (FID) to begin construction of a 20 MW green hydrogen production facility in Milford Haven, Wales. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with commissioning expected by early 2028. It is expected to produce approximately 2,000 tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen annually.
