Ontario signs agreements for 14 renewable projects

Ontario’s independent electricity system operator (IESO) has signed 20-year agreements for 14 renewable energy projects through its Long-Term 2 – Energy Stream 1 Request for Proposals (LT2(e-1) RFP), aiming to add over 3 TWh of annual electricity supply. The selection consists of twelve solar and two wind projects, designed to meet Ontario’s projected energy demands for the early 2030s. These contracts were secured through competitive bidding at a cost 21 per cent lower than previous large-scale renewable agreements.

The projects include the 15.75 MW Chatsworth Solar Project in the Township of Chatsworth, the 167.2 MW CarbonFree Fort Frances Project in the Rainy River District, the 154 MW CarbonFree Kynoch Project in Algoma District, the 60 MW CarbonFree Rainy River Project in the Township of Chapple, and the 200 MW Dunns Valley Solar Project in Crown land.

It also includes the 19.2 MW Elmbrook Agrivoltaics Project in Prince Edward County, the 57.2 MW Fort Frances Solar Project in the Town of Fort Frances, the 200 MW Gichigami Wind Project in Crown land, the 9 MW Golden Leaf Agrivoltaics facility in Perth, the 17.6 MW Cedar Agrivoltaics site in Hanover, the 141.25 MW Massey Solar Project in the Township of Sables-Spanish Rivers and the 50 MW Paradis Bay Solar in North Cobalt.

In addition to these, the projects include the 200 MW Northern Breeze Wind Project in the Thunder Bay area, and the 23.9 MW Timmins Mountjoy Solar Project in the City of Timmins. Every project features significant social impact, with at least 50 per cent Indigenous equity ownership required for each of the 14 awarded contracts. This procurement is the first of four scheduled LT2 phases.
