Hydro Tasmania launches tender for renewable projects

Hydro Tasmania has launched an open call for proposals from new wind and solar projects across the state to increase the amount of electricity available to the Tasmanian grid. The utility is seeking a commercial offtake arrangement with one or more projects capable of supplying up to 1,500 GWh of power each year. These projects must be able to begin operation within the next five to six years.  The deadline for submission of expressions of interest is December 5, 2025.

The tender aims to encourage additional renewable capacity that can operate alongside existing hydropower resources to help address rising energy needs. The utility referenced market forecasts by the Australian Energy Market Operator, indicating that electricity demand in Tasmania is expected to rise from 2030.

In August 2025, the Australian, Tasmanian, and Victorian governments confirmed their invstment in Hydro Tasmania’s Marinus Link project. As per the company statement, Marinus Link and the North-West Transmission Development are essential for supporting future energy demand through strengthened interconnection, transmission, and flexible hydro alongside wind and solar.
