The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has approved a $67 million financing package for Banco do Nordeste do Brasil S.A. (BNB) to boost renewable energy integration from Brazil’s Northeast region into the national grid. The funding will be equally shared between the IDB and the Renewable Energy Integration Program of the Climate Investment Funds (CIF-REI). The initiative aims to strengthen grid reliability and improve the efficiency and flexibility of the country’s power supply. Implementation will commence following the completion of necessary legal procedures under Brazilian law.
The financing will enable BNB to expand credit facilities for projects focused on increasing transmission and distribution capacity, supporting energy storage systems, and increasing adoption of technologies that enhance Brazil’s electrical system flexibility. With concessional and competitively priced resources from the IDB and CIF, BNB will extend credit lines with favourable interest rates to investors in the energy sector, supporting modernisation and digitalisation efforts across Northeast Brazil.
Funding will be directed toward private-sector projects for the purchase of machinery, equipment, systems, and infrastructure linked to renewable power generation and grid automation. Additionally, it will cover investments in emerging technologies such as batteries, green hydrogen, smart grids, and automation systems. The programme, developed under the CIF-REI Investment Plan with support from Brazil’s Ministries of Finance, Mines and Energy, and Science, Technology and Innovation as well as IDB and the World Bank, complements the Northeast Productive Development Programme approved by the IDB in 2023.
