Hy2gen secures approval for renewable ammonia project in Norway

Hy2gen Nordic AS, a subsidiary of the global renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen, has received zoning approval from the municipal council of Sauda, Norway for the Iverson renewable ammonia facility at the Birkeland industrial site. The project includes a 270 MW electrolysis plant powered by hydropower and is designed to supply renewable ammonia to the maritime sector.

The project is expected to offset around 3 million tonnes of carbon emissions during its first ten years of operation. Additionally, it will also generate significant local employment, with more than 300 workers involved in the construction phase, and 50 to 60 permanent roles once operations begin.

With the zoning decision finalised, the project will advance to technical development before a final investment decision is made. Furthermore, the project aligns with Rogaland County’s zero-emission industrial plan and supports Norway’s national climate objectives.

In May 2025, Hy2gen and H2V, a subsidiary of the SAMFI-Invest group, announced the launch of their H4 Marseille Fos joint venture. The €1.5 billion investment is expected to accelerate the deployment of sustainable fuel production at H2V’s 390 MW low-carbon hydrogen production project in Fos-sur-Mer.
