Vikas Gaba: Partner and National Head – Power & Utilities, KPMG India

With over 21 years in the sector, Vikas Gaba’s journey reflects a deep commitment to shaping sustainable energy futures through strategic consulting, policy innovation and institutional reform. His academic foundation – a master’s degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Jamia Millia Islamia – has equipped him with both analytical rigour and technical insight. Prior to KPMG, Vikas held leadership roles at Mercados Energy Markets India and The Energy and Resources Institute, focusing on power market reforms, regulatory strategy and capacity building across South Asia.

According to Gaba, one of India’s defining challenges and opportunities lies in shaping its clean energy manufacturing story amid shifting geopolitical dynamics. He says that India’s growing economy demands not just deployment – where progress has been strong – but also upstream capabilities – resources, materials, manufacturing and skilled labour. The country’s large captive demand is a strategic advantage, and its innovation ecosystem is beginning to coalesce in meaningful ways. “To emerge as a credible alternative in the global cleantech landscape, India must play the full game – where innovation, skills, manufacturing ecosystems and policy converge. The production-linked incentive scheme is a step in that direction, catalysing domestic capacity in solar photovoltaics, batteries and specialty materials. But the real test lies in integrating these efforts into a cohesive industrial strategy. If India can get this story right, it will not just serve its own energy transition but it also will help de-risk the global supply chain and offer the world a stable, scalable alternative in the race towards net zero,” he says.

Gaba’s leadership style blends empathy, agility and strategic foresight. He fosters a culture of experimentation, encouraging teams to challenge norms and co-create solutions with lasting impact. His consulting philosophy emphasises transformation over transactions, partnering with clients to craft visionary, executable strategies that drive systemic change.

Vikas believes that the future of energy is defined by sustainability, resilience and innovation. Technology will power intelligent grids, enable renewable integration and decentralise energy systems – ushering in a value-centric era where environmental, economic and social priorities converge. Consulting, Vikas believes, must evolve into strategic partnership – co-creating data-driven solutions and enabling implementation. According to him, success will be measured not by recommendations alone but also by the enduring value across financial, operational and societal dimensions.
