Northern Railways is likely to commence the pilot run of the hydrogen train soon on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana as the project nears completion. With this, an uninterrupted power supply of 11 kilovolts (kV) has been secured for the hydrogen plant at Jind, which will ensure continuous refuelling of hydrogen in the trainset.
The hydrogen facility at Jind will provide fuel for the train during its final commissioning and normal operations. Furthermore, the said facility has a 3,000 kg storage capacity and is in the final stages of commissioning.
Earlier in December 2025, Indian Railways completed the country’s first domestically developed hydrogen-powered train set. The pilot initiative was created in line with the specifications of the Research, Design and Standards Organisation.
