THDC India Limited (THDCIL) has announced the commencement of the commercial operation date (COD) process for the second unit (250 MW) of its 1,000 MW Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) in Uttarakhand. The milestone event was virtually inaugurated by Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power.
The Tehri PSP holds the distinction of being the country’s first variable speed pumped storage facility and the largest such project implemented by a central public sector enterprise. With the first unit having entered commercial operations in June 2025, the commissioning of the second unit marks a key step forward in enhancing India’s hydropower and grid management capabilities.
The Tehri PSP comprises four reversible units of 250 MW each, offering 1,000 MW of peaking power generation capacity. This flexibility plays a crucial role in grid balancing and ensuring system reliability amid increasing renewable energy integration. Once all four units are commissioned, the Tehri Hydro Power Complex will have a total capacity of 2,400 MW, making it the largest hydropower complex in the country.
