Rachika A. Sahay, Partner, Argus Partners

Rachika A. Sahay is a partner at Argus Partners. Prior to this, she was a partner at HSA Advocates. In the past, she spent nearly nine years at Trilegal, following which she held in-house roles as general counsel for Weatherford and Ostro Energy.

Sahay has over 19 years of extensive experience in all aspects of the power, oil and gas, and infrastructure sectors, including advising clients on investments, contracts, financing, disputes and land acquisition. She is happy to be a part of the renewables sector, which is essential for protecting the environment.

According to Sahay, “In the past decade, the renewable energy industry has seen a major boost in terms of incentives and subsidies from the Government of India. Private sector involvement in renewable energy development involves the sale of power to either state utilities or to commercial and industrial players under third-party or captive power purchase arrangements. However, developers are still plagued by certain issues. Factors such as increasing market competitiveness and methodologies such as e-reverse bidding have led to the discovery of lower tariffs. Further, the ever changing regulatory landscape and multiple instances of conflicting interpretations by the fora governing the sector have led to a state of confusion among developers. Even if such issues are eventually resolved in favour of the developers, in the interim, there is an impact on their realisation under the power purchase agreements, which may affect the terms of financing, rate of return, etc.”

Her management style emphasises the importance of effective leadership. She focuses on identifying and leveraging the strengths of her team members to ensure effective work delivery. Collaboration and open communication are key aspects of her management style. She tries to uncomplicate issues for clients to help them arrive at commercial and practical solutions. She also values effective delegation and encourages her team to discuss their professional concerns with her openly.

“In our profession, seniors are not just leaders, they are mentors,” says Sahay.

Sahay holds a degree in law from the National Law Institute University, Bhopal, and an LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She likes to travel and spend quality time with family. She also likes reading biographies and believes that nothing inspires one better than a true story of an achiever.
