PM Modi introduces solar project with BESS in Lakshadweep

India’s Prime Minister has inaugurated on-grid solar project in Lakshadweep, featuring an advanced battery energy storage system (BESS). With a combined solar capacity of 1.7 MW and an advanced 1.4 MWh battery storage facility at Kavaratti, this project, developed by the Solar Energy Corporation of India, New Delhi, encompasses the islands of Kavaratti and Agatti. SunSource Energy has provided engineering, procurement and construction services for the development of the project.

Furthermore, the Lakshadweep Energy Development Agency is set to obtain power from these solar installations, signifying a significant transition from reliance on diesel-generated power to adopting a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy source for the area. This project is anticipated to save about Rs 2.5 billion in commercial costs over the course of its anticipated technical lifetime. The decrease in diesel consumption by as much as 19 million liters and the mitigation of 58,000 tonnes of emissions highlight its importance in advocating for clean energy.

In December 2023, Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited issued tender for engineering, procurement and construction of a 185 MW grid-connected solar project, along with a 254 MWh BESS in Kajra village of Bihar’s Lakhisarai district.

In the same month, Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited issued a tender to select developers for development of 250 MW/500 MWh (250 MW x 2 hours) standalone BESS for on demand use in Gujarat.
