Greenspot, an Australian investment firm, has received approval from the New South Wales (NSW) Department of Planning and Environment for a battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The 500 MW/1,000 MWh project will be built on the site of the disused Wallerawang Power Station near Lithgow. An investment of about $280 million is anticipated to be needed.
Furthermore,the BESS was authorised as part of the NSW Government’s Priority Assessment Program, which expedites the evaluation of ‘state-significant’ development projects. It will be connected to the 330 kV Wallerawang Substation, which previously supplied electricity from the coal-fired Wallerawang plant, once completed. Greenspot stated that the site offers good access to existing and proposed road and rail infrastructure, as well as water infrastructure. It is also in close proximity to high-integrity data networks.
In July 2022, wpd offshore Australia Holding, part of Germany’s wpd Group signed a joint venture with Australis Energy to construct three offshore wind energy projects off the coast of Australia. The three offshore wind projects will be constructed in the coastal waters of Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, and will have a combined capacity of 1.4 GW.
