tesa inks agreement with EWE for 500 tonnes of green hydrogen in Germany

tesa has signed an agreement with EWE HYDROGEN GmbH to receive 500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually for its plant in Hamburg from 2028 in Emden, Germany. The hydrogen will be used for steam generation and is expected to replace fossil fuels, reducing emissions at the plant by around 6,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year. EWE plans to produce the hydrogen at its 320 MW hydrogen production plant in Emden, which is scheduled to start operations by the end of 2027. The hydrogen will be produced using renewable electricity and transported to Hamburg through the developing hydrogen core network.

tesa is also preparing its Hamburg plant for hydrogen use by connecting it to the HH-WIN hydrogen network, with the connection planned for completion by the end of 2027. The plant will use around 500 tonnes of hydrogen annually from January 2028, supported by two hydrogen-ready dual-fuel steam boilers, one of which has already been installed and connected.

Earlier, in September 2026, EWE GASSPEICHER GmbH, a subsidiary of EWE Group, awarded Bilfinger a contract to deliver a hydrogen treatment facility for its planned hydrogen storage facility in Huntorf, Germany. Bilfinger will handle the engineering, installation, and commissioning of the facility.
