Tata Power Company Limited has partnered with Norway-based Ocean Sun to introduce membrane-based floating solar technology in India. The companies will develop an approximately 300 kWp floating solar pilot project at Tata Power’s Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra. Ocean Sun’s technology uses a thin, hydro-elastic membrane that floats directly on the water surface instead of pontoon structures.
Furthermore, the pilot will assess the technology’s performance, reliability, cost competitiveness and scalability under Indian conditions. It will help compare the system against conventional floating solar solutions across parameters such as generation, capacity utilisation factor, installation, operation and maintenance and capital costs.
Earlier, in September 2026, Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Tata Power Company Limited, commissioned a 100 MW group captive solar project at Vellalankottai and Nalandhula villages in Kayathar, Tamil Nadu. The project will supply power to TP Solar (40.625 MW), Tata Electronics (53.125 MW), and Tata Realty Infrastructure Limited (6.25 MW). The project is expected to generate 240.63 million units of electricity annually, and offset around 150,000 tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
