Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has invited bids for the selection of battery energy storage system (BESS) developers to procure 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh of energy storage capacity for five years, with a 500 MW/2,000 MWh green shoe option. The projects will be developed under the build-own-operate model through tariff-based competitive bidding. The deadline for bid submission is October 6, 2026.
The maximum bidding capacity is 1,000 MW/4,000 MWh, while the minimum capacity is 100 MW/400 MWh. According to the tender guidelines, the scope of work includes the selected BESS developers providing storage services to MSEDCL on an on-demand basis and maintaining the contracted capacity throughout the five-year contract period. The BESS will discharge stored energy from 5:00 PM to 7:00 AM and charge during solar hours as scheduled by MSEDCL.
MSEDCL will provide the energy required for charging at the interconnection point, while the BESS developer will be responsible for establishing grid connectivity, including bay space and associated infrastructure. Furthermore, the bidders are required to submit an earnest money deposit of Rs 100,000 and a performance bank guarantee of Rs 1,000,000 per MW.
Earlier, in September 2026, MSEDCL announced the results of its 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh standalone BESS tender with viability gap funding support.
