AES commissions Petersburg Energy Center in Indiana

AES Indiana, a subsidiary of AES Corporation, has commissioned the Petersburg Energy Center in Pike county. The Petersburg Energy Center includes 250 MW of solar capacity installed through over 515,000 solar panels, along with 180 MWh of battery energy storage system (BESS). The project will generate enough renewable electricity to power more than 100,000 homes.

The project was identified in AES Indiana’s 2022 Integrated Resource Plan as a critical addition to replace retired Petersburg Units 1 and 2. Additionally, it helps address seasonal capacity requirements outlined by the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). The battery component is intended to support peak demand management and reduce long-term operational and fuel costs.

In April 2025, AES Indiana announced the commencement of full operations at the 200 MW Pike county BESS. The BESS project has a discharge duration of up to four hours, and can supply electricity to more than 38,000 homes during peak demand periods.

In January 2026, EDP Renewables North America LLC commenced commercial operations at the Riverstart Solar IV project in Indiana. Located in Randolph county, the project has an installed capacity of 150 MW.
