ECF and partners join forces for green hydrogen project in Canada

Elemental Clean Fuels (ECF) is working with Sc.wén̓wen Economic Development and Kruger Kamloops Pulp L.P. on the Kamloops Clean Energy Centre (KCEC), a proposed green hydrogen facility with a planned capacity of 10 MW. The KCEC project is planned at the Kruger Kamloops pulp mill in Kamloops, British Columbia, and is expected to supply all of its green hydrogen output directly to the kiln operations, replacing an estimated 16 per cent of the mill’s existing natural gas use.

Moreover, the shift to green hydrogen is expected to lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 7,000 tonnes annually. Additionally, oxygen generated as part of the green hydrogen production process is planned to be reused within the pulp mill. This oxygen reuse will support pulp processing and whitening activities, while reducing the use of more aggressive chemical inputs .

In November 2025, the Government of Ontario announced a new round of the Hydrogen Innovation Fund with an allocation of $30 million, The programme aims to support hydrogen development projects to strengthen Ontario’s clean energy economy. It is administered by the Independent Electricity System Operator and will be implemented through two dedicated funding streams.
