ADB approves $650 million loan to drive rooftop solar adoption in India

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $650 million policy-based loan to help India accelerate rooftop solar adoption. The financing under Subprogramme 1 of the Accelerating Affordable and Inclusive Rooftop Solar Systems Development Programme will support India’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana.

The policy-based loan includes $3 million in technical assistance to support reform implementation and strengthen institutional capacity. It will further promote gender-inclusive participation in the rooftop solar sector.

Earlier in November 2025, ReNew Energy received $331 million from the ADB to support the development of a clean energy project in Andhra Pradesh.

Furthermore, in October 2025, ADB approved a results-based loan of $460 million to upgrade rural power infrastructure and promote distributed renewable energy generation in Maharashtra.
