EWE’s 320 MW hydrogen plant begins construction in Germany

EWE has initiated construction of a 320 MW hydrogen generation facility in Emden, East Frisia, Germany. The civil and structural works have also been contracted to a consortium of construction firms comprising Ludwig Freytag, Gebrüder Neumann and MBN. Production of green hydrogen is expected to commence by the end of 2027, with supply directed to industrial consumers. The facility will generate hydrogen from renewables. Furthermore, it is a part of the Clean Hydrogen Coastline initiative.

In May 2025, EWE awarded NEUMAN & ESSER the compressor technology contract for the Emden facility. This followed an earlier March 2025 order from EWE to the same company as well to supply two compressors for the hydrogen storage project in Huntorf, Wesermarsch in Germany.

In November 2025, Shell Energy Europe Limited, a subsidiary of Shell plc, signed two power purchase agreements in Germany to secure renewable electricity for the REFHYNE 2 hydrogen electrolyser under construction at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rheinland. The agreements include a five-year offtake for about one-third of the power from 332 MW Nordsee One offshore wind farm and a ten-year offtake for roughly three-quarters of the power from a 230 MW solar project being built by Solarkraftwerk Halenbeck-Rohlsdorf. Power from both projects will support electrolyser operations scheduled to begin in 2027.
