The World Bank Group, through the International Finance Corporation, together with the Johor State’s strategic investment arm Permodalan Darul Ta’zim (PDT), and Ditrolic Energy, have entered into a collaboration to develop the Southern Johor renewable energy corridor (SJERC). The corridor covers a 2,000 square km zone planned as a combined solar and battery energy storage system development area intended to supply clean electricity for Johor’s industrial growth and support the ASEAN Power Grid’s (APG) cross-border power trade objectives.
The initial phase is planned to include up to 4 GWp of solar capacity and 5.12 GWh of storage capacity on a 10,000 acre site. The $6 billion project is expected to supply renewable electricity for local and multinational companies in Johor, including data-centre operators, manufacturers, and other industrial users in Johor. Additionally, the project will support clean power transmission to Singapore as part of the APG initiative to strengthen regional electricity networks by 2045.
The initiative is expected to support regional economic activity by creating around 125,000 jobs linked to construction, operations, and maintenance. It was formalised alongside the release of the Johor Renewable Energy Policy 2030. It outlines coordinated work across project development, technical inputs, and potential financing. Moreover, the plan is aligned with the Johor Green Development Policy 2030 and forms a key component of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone masterplan.
