Petroleum Minister shares India’s green hydrogen achievements

Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently announced that India’s hydrogen age has begun. The country has set a goal to produce 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, accounting for about 10 per cent of the global market. He further added that the cost of green hydrogen is anticipated to reduce to below $3 per kg from the current $3.5 per kg.

As per official estimates, India could offset $150 billion worth of energy imports if green hydrogen is priced at $2.5 per kg. Hardeep Singh Puri also stated that about 1 million tonnes per annum (TPA) of green hydrogen capacity is being planned, beginning with tenders for 42,000 TPA, which will later be expanded to 170,000 tonnes per annum. During the pilot phase, 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles are expected to be deployed along with nine refuelling stations. He further mentioned that 19 companies have been allocated nearly 9 TPA of production capacity.

Moreover, as part of India’s green hydrogen push, NTPC is developing a green hydrogen hub at Pudimadaka near Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project represents an investment of around Rs 1.85 trillion. This marks the first green hydrogen hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. Furthermore, the hub will feature 20 GW of renewable energy capacity with the ability to produce 1,500 TPD of green hydrogen and 7,500 TPD of its derivatives.
